KALOMBOLI: TEACHERS' ORIENTATION PROGRAM
June 12, 2013: The AVEC team traveled all the way today to conduct a 'Value Education Orientation Program for forty teachers of Carmel Convent High School - Kalomboli. Fr. Glenford Lowe and Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes were warmly welcomed by Sr. Joviana, Principal of the School. Floral bouquets were also presented to the speakers of the day. The theme for the day was 'management By Values' (MBV).
Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes, Project coordinator of the program, welcome the teachers to the Orientation Program. He began the session invoking God's blessings for peace, health and happiness through a Prayer song titled 'Sarvesham Swastir Bhavatu'. The teachers took part in a a fantasy meditation that also included slowing down and breathing rhythmically. The AVEC report for the scholastic year 2012-13 was presented. He then took the opportunity to introduce Fr. Glenn.
The Orientation Program 'Management By values' (MBV) was presented on three levels. Fr. Lowe drew attention first to the world of the young today and to understand and feel the pain points of the young students today. This itself was an eye opener to many to understand the students in the class room today. The second part of the session, focused on the need to 'clarify certain assumptions and mindsets' that prevent one from looking at reality and responding to it effectively.
The teachers were asked to look at their own personal values and the values that their institution stands for. "Unless your personal values align with the values of the institution, there is very little meaning and contribution one can make", he said. Through the use of a puzzle, a Powerpoint Presentation and daily life experiences, Fr. Lowe was able to draw the attention of the teachers to really understand Value education as an Education to Becoming! "You values are a reflection of your lifestyle", he kept repeating.
In the following session, based on the Brian Hall- Benjamin Tonna 'Value Map', the teachers were able to plot their valued path and make choices to move on to a higher phase of consciousness. It was a revelation to all as they looked into their own personal lives and challenged themselves to stop living merely on the levels of survival, stability or mere success. Significant Lives are valued based persons who have the courage to view the world as a mystery in which we can all contribute.
