HOLY CROSS HIGH SCHOOL - LOWER PAREL: STUDENTS' ORIENTATION

HOLY CROSS HIGH SCHOOL - LOWER PAREL: STUDENTS' ORIENTATION PROGRAM
August 21, 2013
Holy Cross High School - Lower Parel organized a full day's Value Orientation program for the students of STDs IX - X. Sr. Lali Sebastian, Principal of the school welcomed the speakers Fr. Glenford Lowe sdb and Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes to the school. After and initial opening prayer by Ropal Rahul Kamble and an introduction by Mrs. Salomi, the nearly five hundred and forty students were taken through a two and a half hours session, for each class, on 'Living Your Life Guided By a Value Compass'.
The session began with a prayerful invocation and a prayer song 'Sarveshaam, Swastir Bhavatu'. Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes organized a fantasy meditation for the students of STD X. Inviting them to inhale all that was positive and good and to exhale all that was toxic and negative was a new experience for many. After the meditation, he introduced Fr. Glenn and above all, made mention of his kidney donation to a fellow Salesian priest, a little of over two years ago.
Fr. Glenford began his session with the help of a PowerPoint presentation, coupled with a lot of reflective moments, deep insights and a bit of humor too. Using a number of true life role models in Value enhancement, like Ms. Kia Scheer, Malala Yousafzai, Ryan Hreljac, Derrick Redmond, and Nic Santanosasco, he challenged the students to start making a worthy contribution to themselves first, and then to society at large. "You are growing up in a place in Mumbai that is fast developing, and unless you equip yourself with values and education, you will never make it to the top here," he advised them. "Have a dream worth living for and let it be guided by a Value compass, " he added.
He invited the students to stop making excuses and to start each day by focusing on 'meaning questions'. Then taking the students through a battery of everyday examples, he invited the students to start reconstructing their value compass. He highlighted 'Twelve Diamond Values' that are essential in living a meaningful Value based life. The values of 'winner' attitudes in life are the foundation to everything else. He touched upon the need to value the importance of good synergistic teams, communicating effectively, confidently and  creatively too. The students were asked to align their Time Management by focusing on the need for accepting corrections, multi tasking, taking accountability and self motivation too. Without living a 'balanced life' and a 'life of abundance', one's life would only be meaningless and selfish too.
What the students really liked was a happy balance between the motivating visuals and the true life examples of people who made a significant contribution to society. The students were really charged to start making a difference in their own class,  school and home too. Once could sense a real satisfaction among the students because a number of their daily life's issues and problems were being handled too in a very insightful and humorous way.
At the end of the session, students Raksta Sheety of STD X-B and Mr. Jain Nirav Kishor of IX-C proposed the vote of thanks. A number of students came forward to write their comments in the AVEC appreciation log book:

ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST HIGH SCHOOL - MAROL: RECOLLECTION STD X STUDENTS

ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST HIGH SCHOOL - MAROL
August 20, 2013
The students of STD X - C/D had a wonderful experience today in school, when the AVEC organized a one day Recollection for one hundred and nine students. Sr. Tara, Principal of the school welcomed the students with a short prayer and then introduced Fr. Glenford Lowe to them. She invited the students to make use of this golden opportunity, that had come their way, to reflect and set a direction to their life. The theme for the day was - "Who am I and what is my worth?"
The session began with a prayer song - 'Dil Ke Mandir Mei'. Fr. Glenn then asked the students to look at their own worth in life. Looking at human beings only from the 'material point of view' is not worth it at all. One has to discover the 'spiritual aspect' of a human being and today's recollection was an opportunity, in someway, to discover it. The session focused on four major points in one's journey of life: Listening attentively to one's 'Now Moment', Revisiting one's Past - no matter how painful or bad, Reorganizing one's Future, and finally, Writing one's Problems on the sand.
Using a few visuals, inspirational songs and touching on true life stories like Malala Yousafzai,  Jacqui Subarido and from one's own religious practices and rituals, the students were able to plot their present moment of life based on various parameters of the 'BODY-MIND-HEART-SOUL' dimension. Sharing in small groups enabled them to unfold the story of their life. It was interesting to see the students take this part of the session very seriously. The next part of the session focused on 'Revisiting one's Past' along the spiral of life. Each student was invited to look at both the good and bad experiences they encountered in their lives. Using a number of symbolic pictures, the students were invited to go deeper into their past life and connect the dots and to recognize the hand of God in it all.
In the final part of the session, the students looked at the 'wheel of their life' and focused on what they need to do to reorganize their future in the various dimensions of life. The students were invited to look at life beyond the confines of the classroom and to prepare themselves for the future with confidence and hope. Believe in a God who cares for you and has plans for every success too. It was indeed a very spiritual moment for one and all the students.
At the end of the session, students Lucia and Warren D'Souza came forward to propose the vote of thanks on behalf of their respective classes. A number of students also wrote their comments in the AVEC appreciation log book:
"At the start of the day,  was really depressed and alone, but after the session, I actually felt enlightened and found some hope. He was really amazing" - Lucia X-C

St. JOHN THE EVANGELIST HIGH SCHOOL - MAROL: STUDENTS' RECOLLECTION

ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST HIGH SCHOOL MAROL - STUDENTS' RECOLLECTION
August 19, 2013
One hundred and thirty five students of STD X -A/B from St. John's High School - Marol took part in a day's recollection that was animated by Fr. Glenford Lowe sdb, Director of AVEC. The school principal, Sr. Taara Ohol, welcomed Fr. Glenn to the school and introduced him too. She highlighted the role that the AVEC plays in inculcating Values among the students. She also made reference to Fr. Glenn regarding his kidney donation to another fellow Salesian priest. She implored God's blessings with an opening prayer.
After an opening prayer song 'Dil Ke Mandir Mei',  Fr. Glenn invited the students to avail of the golden opportunity given to them to reflect on their life and to make decisions for change for the future. The theme for the day's recollection was 'My Spiral of Life'. He drew the attention of each students to go beyond the 'material value' a person and to focus on the 'spiritual value' that makes our life so meaningful and purposeful. Citing a story from the latest Readers' Digest, he made the students reflect on four important dimensions: Listen Carefully to God's voice, Revisit your Past, Reorganize your Future and finally Write your problems of the sand.
Through a numbers of reflective exercises and small group sharing, he guided the young students to 'connect the dots' of their lives and to see where their life was heading. He helped the students to look at their  'BODY-MIND-HEART-SOUL' integration and to plot the important events of their past life on the 'Spiral of Life'. The students took the time to share their personal life stories with one another - though for some, it was a very strange experience. Fr. Glenn also invited the students to look ahead into the future and to see where it was heading. "God desires the best in your life and has plans for your peace and prosperity. Everyone needs to align with God's will, rather than allowing your life to be high jacked by someone else," he said. In the end, the students looked at their 'wheel of life' and the necessary resolutions they need to make to new start in life. The session ended with a song ' Carry Your Candle".
