PADUA HIGH SCHOOL -Mankhurd: VALUE ORIENTATION SEMINAR

February 13, 2012: At the invitation of Fr. Philip D’Souza, theAVEC team today visited Padua High School, Mankhurd for an Orientation Programfor the students of standard nine. In all, one hundred and forty three studentsattended the three sessions that were conducted in the school audio visualhall.

After a brief introduction by thedeputy Principal, Mrs. Prudence Green, the students were initiated into thepurpose and importance of Value Education in one’s academic journey. Mr.Rochwyn Fernandes very ably invited to students to get into the right ambientby an awareness session; that also included a fantasy meditation. The studentsof all the three divisions, very attentively, participated whole-heartedly inthe entire program.

Fr. Glenford Lowe, then, took thestudents on a journey of self discovery and self worth through a few exercisesand a PowerPoint presentation. The students were challenged to take an honestlook at their personal life and the way they invest their time on what isimportant in their life. “Take the time to focus on a better self, and you willhave a better world too,” said Fr. Lowe.

Though the time was extremelyshort, the students did benefit a lot from today’s session. Mrs. Green summedup the day’s program with a word of appreciation. After the session, the AVECteam spent a few minutes with the manager, Fr. Patrick D’Mello. The studentswere extremely well behaved and receptive. We congratulate the schoolmanagement for this.

Value Orientation for Studentsof St. Elias, Bandra:

February 6, 2012:

At the invitation of Sr.Philomena, the AVEC Team visited St. Elias High School, Bandra for a ValueEducation Seminar for the nearly 160 students of standard eight. The sessionbegan with the Principal, Sr. Philomena giving the words of introduction andwelcoming the guest speakers.

Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes began the session with a prayer song followed by a short meditation that invited the students to moments of personal silence and awareness of one's own breath of life. Silence at times can be most disturbing, especially when one is not used to it. The students did take time to get into this session.

Fr. Glenford Lowe then tookthe session on defining self and creating space in one’s life to appreciate andvalue self. The focus was on looking at one’s life and one’s time and trying tocreate sync between the two. Once we value self, then we begin to valueeverything around us too.

For the young students today,who are caught up in so much of turmoil, noise and insecurity, the need todwell on higher values is difficult and not easy to imbibe. Value Education isbasically an ‘Education to Becoming’ and greater need is felt to make thiseducation available to the young today in all our schools.

HOLY CROSS HIGHSCHOOL, JUHU TARA

VALUE ORIENTATION FORSTUDENTS

January 18, 2012: The ArchdiocesanValue Education Centre (AVEC – Mumbai) began the New Year 2012 with a two hourValue Education session at Holy Cross High School, Juhu Tara, for hundred and eightstudents belonging to STD IX –X. Fr. Edmund Mascarenhas, Principal of theschool warmly welcomed the resource personnel, Fr. Glenford Lowe and Mr. RochwynFernandes to the program.

Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes began thesession with a Prayer Song that focused on the presence of God in all things.He then invited the students to connect with the ‘Woodcutter Story’ by takingthe time to make an inward journey through a silent fantasy meditation. Allpraise to the students who were able to go through these moments of selfawareness with a lot of seriousness.

Through a number of practicalexamples, video clips and an illustrative PowerPoint presentation, Fr. GlenfordLowe, was able to capture the minds and hearts of the young students to look attheir life’s journey and to have the courage to re-set the clock of their activityto sync with their life’s story. The personal sharing by the students and theinsights into the various values that are essential ingredients for a fruitfuland meaningful life were well appreciated by all. The level of sharing wassincere, deep and very personal; even to the point of tears.

Ms. Ursula Rodrigues proposed thevote of thanks on behalf of the students and management. One could sense a newspirit of optimism and hope among the students, especially the final year Std Xstudents.

November 18-19, 2011: The students of Standard Ten, numbering over two hundred and fifty, were taken through a two-day annual retreat based on Values; love of God, Others, World and Self. Fr. Glenford Lowe, Director of AVEC animated the students for both the days.

The students took time to gift themselves with silence, personal reflection and group sharing on a several key issues that touch the life of a student. “You are not part of a Lost Generation’, emphasized Fr. Lowe. Through numerous life touching true stories, personal testimonies and the use of well prepared hand-outs, the students found themselves challenged to face life with a new perspective.

The River Mee and time for personal silence did help the students to go deeper in to themselves and to see life with a new perspective and meaning.

Thanks to the Management, Sr. Audrey the Principal and the various class teachers for making it possible for the students to have the luxury of a two day Retreat.

ABE Value Coordinators' Meeting Nov. 2011

November 17.2011: The Archdiocesan Value Education Centre (AVEC – Mumbai) was back in action after nearly four months with an Orientation Program for the Value Education Coordinators from the schools affiliated to the Mumbai Archdiocesan Board of Education (ABE). The Orientation was held in the Don Bosco Primary School, Matunga on November 17, 2011. Over one hundred and twenty Coordinators representing over 90 schools participated in the event.

Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes welcomed the participants on behalf of AVEC. A short prayer service organized by Sr. Vera Almeida set the tone for the day. Fr. Gregory Lobo, ABE Secretary inaugurated the day with a few words of advice and assurance of support to the AVEC program. “Your students are not files, they are people who need to be loved and valued,” said Fr. Lobo.

Eminent speakers were invited to address the august gathering. Mrs. Elaine Charles, former Principal of St. Xavier’s Teachers’ Training College was the guest speaker. She enlightened the Value Educators on ‘the What, the WHY and the HOW of Value Education’. In her eloquent style, coupled with her long standing experience as an educator, she brought home the importance of Value Education in our schools.

Fr. Magi Murzello, Principal of St. Andrew’s High School Bandra, introduced creative and innovative methods in imparting Values to the students. The spoke on ‘Mission Sunshine’, a value based venture in his school, as a step in the direction of appreciation and bringing sunshine into the darkened lives of people and students too.

Fr. Glenford Lowe, Director of AVEC enlightened the Coordinators on the ‘Twelve Diamond Value Project’ that the centre has initiated in the schools affiliated to the ABE. He gave a summary of the entire project and invited the schools to create an ambient that would foster such values. The role of the Value Educator was also highlighted in the session.

Mr. Jimmy Joseph, ASIA BOOK HOUSE presented their popular school book series ‘Roadmap to Good Living, while Mr. Hiralal Makwana, Vichar Value Education Resources spoke the importance of Audiovisuals in teaching Value Education and invited the coordinators to have a look at their AV resources.

Fr. Savio Silveira, Director GreenLine challenged the participants to look at the importance of being ‘Greener people for a Greener World’. Using current statistics and practical ways, Fr. Silveira showed how Eco-friendly Values could be initiated in schools to make students ‘Respect the earth and its resources’.

Value Education Coordinators took time to evaluate the activities of the AVEC and proposed ways in which the bonds and communication between the Schools and the AVEC could be strengthened. A new audio CD ‘Assembly Songs for Every School’ was also made available. A DVD containing Value Education Resources was also given to each participant.

Special word of thanks to Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes, Sr. Vera Almeida, Mrs. Margaret Joseph and Ms. Michelle D’Souza for the efforts made to coordinate the entire program and to Fr. Derrick Misquitta, Administrator of Don Bosco School – Matunga, for the use of the school auditorium.

July 12, 2011: St. Anne's, FORT - VIII - X Students Value Orientation Program:

Under the new leadership of Sr. Guilhermina Monterio, Principal of St. Anne's, the AVEC team were invited to take a Value Orientation Program for 203 Students from Std. VIII - Std. X. On behalf of the school management, Ms. Tessy, Value Education Coordinator, welcome Fr. Glenford Lowe to the school.

Fr. Glenford began the session with a motivation song, "Be Your Best". A prayer invoking the blessings on God was then made.

The main Value Education session began with a poem written by Jonathan Reid, 'LOST GENERATION'. The poem at first, seems to be very negative and pessimistic about today's young generation. When read in reverse, the entire poem makes a world of a difference; very positive and encouraging. Fr. Glenn used this poem as a challenge to young people to turn their perception of the world and life upside down and to stop living lives of mediocrity.

Fr. Glenn, in a very creative and humorous way, enlightened the students to start living 'Diamond Lives' and to discover the Diamond Values in life. Turning your 'Lost Generation' world into something significant needs a lot of refocusing to do.Unless one's life is based on strong values, one will be lost forever! The Twelve Diamond Values were then explained to the students. Through the use of a number of small, yet meaningful, examples and stories and visuals, the students were able to understand the importance of being Value based in everything.

The session ended with the screening of two inspiring songs, 'Tell Me WHY?' and 'The CLIMB'. At the end of the session, a number of students came forward to write their impressions of the day's program in the AVEC Appreciation log book. Some of their comments are here below:

July 9, 2011: Leadership Training for School Prefects of OLGC - SION

Today was a very special day for Eighty Seven Leaders of Our Lady of Good Counsel, Sion. Thanks to the school management, Fr. Carlos the Principal, Bro. Jerome and the two teachers Mrs. Margaret Pinto and Mrs. Margaret D'Souza for planning a program like this at the Royal Gardens Resort, Vasai. After a very comfortable bus ride and a tasty hot breakfast, the students gathered in the air conditioned hall for their three hour session on Leadership.

Fr. Glenford Lowe, immediately in his usual charismatic style had the students all ears to his challenging insights and practical sessions. He started by a small video clip, a prayer song to invoke God's blessing on the day. "I am here to upset your world and help you to recreate a better one", he said. Using the presentation, "Youth - a Lost Generation" as a starter, he challenged the students to begin to reverse life's situations and make something beautiful out of it. To do so, one had to create a better self first. The first session was fully centered on "Creating a Better Self". Good leaders first win themselves, and then only have the power to win others.

The second session was a very lively and entertaining one, and yet power packed with deep insights to become better leaders. Through various exercises and group work, Fr. Glenford Lowe touched on important questions that leaders need to ask along the way: Who am I? (self awareness), Where do I want to go from here? (Vision & Mission), How do I go from here? (Planning), Who goes with Me? (Team Work), How can I do things differently? (Creativity), When do I need to do it? (Time Management), How do I delegate responsibly? (Delegation and Communication) and finally, How do I sharpen the Saw? (Self renewal).

The three hours were truly power packed and the entire student leaders would testify that this was an enriching experience. Through fun and sharing, active participation and personal reflection, the students were able to believe in the task given to them and to responsibly lead the school during this new scholastic year 2011-12.

Value yourself and life the most. There is a saying, ‘I pointed my finger to the stars and all that you saw was the tip of my finger’. We had a wonderful experience today and I will implement them in our lives to become good and better leaders. Manalee Das – School Captain of OLGC

JUNE 21, 2011: St. Anne’s Girls High School, DABUL – Teachers’ Orientation

The entire AVEC Team was present today, at St. Anne’s Girls High School, Dabul to facilitate an Orientation Program for thirty teachers. For the first time, Sr. Vera Almeida and Mrs. Margaret Dubey also joined the AVEC team. After a brief introduction by Sandra Dias, the session began with a prayer song and a few moments of personal relaxation through a fantasy meditation conducted by Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes.

The Teachers were then taken through a moment of 'Self Renewal' through a number of different interactive activities and personal reflections. "I am here to upset your world", said Fr. Glenford, as he challenged the teachers to look at their role as educators and value gurus in the educative journey of their students. We don't have to be be victims of routine, our lives can be spirit filled by innovative rhythm. The teachers were invited to self-evaluate their IMPACT on students. "To have a Diamond school with Diamond Students, you have first to become Diamond Teachers," said Fr. Glenn.

Giving Students their 'rightful' place in the educative setup is important. To make this happen, a certain part of our 'old world' will have to be turned upside down.This was very well demonstrated in the group activity. This 'old world' has become part of our routine world that at times it is possible, that our heart is no longer in it. The session on COMMITMENT was another opportunity to look at how each one invests their 'personal resource' in the school. The choice now is to 'renew oneself' with a new perspective. What you see is what you get. Fr. Glenn also took time to explain, very briefly, the 12 Diamond Value Project.

At the end of the session, Ms. Colin Cardoza proposed the vote of thanks on behalf of the school management. Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes then explained about the AVEC Blog and invited the teachers to view the blog to keep track of all the AVEC animation and Resource programs.

June 20, 2011: LIVING DIAMOND VALUED LIVES: St. ANNE'S GIRLS - DABUL

The AVEC team began their Diamond Valued Project today, by animating the students of standard X at St. Anne's Girls' High School - Dabul. Hundred and Six students participated in the two hour long session that enabled them to take a step back to launch into the future with greater focus and meaning. Ms.Glynise Vittarthy welcomed the two resource persons on behalf of the school management.

Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes, then briefed the students on the purpose of our animation program and then invited the students to relax through an awareness breathing exercise. The students began the session with a lot of seriousness and participated very attentively all through. One could gauge, at the very outset, that these were a set of very disciplined students.

Fr. Glenford then took over and invited the students to make a worthwhile contibution to self first, before making a worthwhile contribution to others. Through various exercises, insightful and motivating reflections and through a participatory interaction, the students were able to see the deeper meaning of taking time out to reflective on one's self. The exercise of Self, Time and the River Me were opportune moments to make a reflective journey inward and to find one's deepest desire and meaning in life.

With a series of examples of young students who made a difference in the world, the students too were challenged to leave behind a significant legacy. through powerful video clips and songs that students were able to look at their lives and to make a difference.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Rozanne D'Cunha.

February 26, 2011: St. Mary's SSC - VII JCP Animation

Over a hundred students of Std VII at St. Mary's SSC, undergoing the Jesuit Certificate Program spent an entire morning focusing on the importance of 'Spirituality'. At the request of the school Principal, Fr. Baptist, Mrs. Nouella Julian the Value education Coordinator invited the AVEC team to animate the three hour session. In spite of being a Saturday, the students took time to sacrifice their holiday to attend the session. The Teachers conducting the Jesuit Certificate Program for the students were also fully involved in the program of the day.

Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes began the session by invoking the presence of the Almighty through a powerful Video song. This was followed by inviting the students to a fantasy meditation that helped them to focus on their breath and relax. This enabled the students to focus on what was to come. The theme for the day was 'Spirituality'. Fr. Glenford Lowe began by enabling the students to look at Religion and Spirituality. Both are different and it was important to be more Spiritual people than merely religious people.

Fr. Glenn enabled the students to look at Spirituality as a 'daily way of doing what is more loving'. Religion focuses on 'helping us to do the right thing', Spirituality transcends and helps us to do the 'loving thing'. Through a number of exercises the students were able to see the need to make and live a 24/7 Spirituality. Religion focused on the Cult, the Creed, the Code of beliefs, the Community, the Covenant and the Cultural Setting. Spirituality on the other hand focused on one's way of living the experience of God in relation to the world, neighbor and self.

After a short break, the students were broken up into small groups. During this time, they were able to share with the others their 'Image of God' and their belief and practice of 'Prayer'. The students also looked at the various blocks in prayer. Fr. Glenn then concluded the session on Prayer with a number of personal testimonies and experiences.

All through the session, the students displayed a keen sense of openness and participated whole heartedly in everything. One could notice a sense of quality in the questions that they asked. At the end, the students gave a standing ovation and a 'rain blessing' to the speakers of the day. Congratulations to all the teachers and the students for this beautiful experience. It is my only hope that many more schools introduce topics such as these to the students.

Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes presented the 'Appreciation Award' to Mrs. Nouella Julian on behalf of the school principal. We congratulate the school management for the very keen interest in promoting Values among the students.

Don Bosco - NERUL, Students' Orientation

February 22, 2011: DON BOSCO SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL - NERUL

This morning, over hundred and ten students belonging to standards seven to nine were given a road map to living life based on essential Values. At the request of Fr. Vivian D'Souza, the Rector of the Don Bosco institution, the AVEC team visited the school and took a two hour session on Values. The school Principal, Fr. Anthony Fonseca welcomed the guest speakers and ensured that all was well prepared for the session. The students were in for a total surprise....

Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes introduced the program for the day and invited the student,through a fantasy meditation, to focus on a 'rhythmic breathing' exercise and to relax in the process. A devotional video clip ushered in the relaxing atmosphere. The students took part in the exercise in a very serious and serene manner. Fr. Glenford Lowe then challenged the students to look at their own life and the way they invest their time in life. "Life has to be lived qualitatively, not just quantitatively. It is not 'how long' but 'how and why' does one live that matters," he added.

Through a battery of small anecdotes, reflective exercises and practical experiences, the students were able to pick up the important points of the session; Focus and care for your self, be the master of your own change, and invest your time fruitfully on what is important in your life. Fr. Glenn challenged the students to have the courage to 're-set' the clock of their life and to really set priorities to what is important in one's life. Taking the Twelve point program of 'Values for the Yatra' he enable the young minds to care for their lives on the level of the 'Body-Mind-Heart-Soul' dimensions.

The students were very cooperative, intuitive and displayed a quality sense of purpose to all that was being spoken to them. Congratulations to the school management and the teachers of the school for the high standards of participation and involvement displayed by the students. Very few schools have displayed such keen interest.

Finally, teacher Daphene proposed the vote of thanks. Two representatives from each class took time to write their observations of the orientation program in the AVEC log book.

St. Charles Girls' High School, Vakola: Std IX Orientation

At the invitation of Sr. Jacinta, Principal of St. Charles Girls' High School, the Value Coordinator Beena Suares made sure that all was well prepared for the animation program for the students of standard nine. Two hundred and forty young students had a three hour orientation program. The main focus of the orientation was to enable the young girls to look at life and their growing up problems with regards to relationships, self esteem and self worth.

Sr. Jacinta D'Souza, welcomed the guest speakers. Beena Suares then introduced the speakers to the students. Floral bouquets by Lizelle Fernandes and Ritu Dixit were presented to the speakers. Mr. Rochwyn then briefly introduced the day's program. A powerful video presentation that highlighted God's presence in the whole of creation was then screened. A fantasy meditation then followed in which the students took time to relax and refresh their tired minds.

Fr. Glenford Lowe then invited the students to look at their lives through a new lens; to compare their 'list of importance' with their 'list of daily schedules'. The students were able to see the importance of re-setting their life's clock and to refocus on investing more time on doing what is important. "It is more important to live life qualitatively rather than merely quantitatively", he emphasized. Through a lot of small interactive moments and exercises the students were able to grasp the essence of appreciating one's live as 'Valued and Loved'.

In the next session, Fr. Glenn was able to relate the Twelve Value points in relation to their 'growing up' concerns. He reminded the students that they are all 'Sensual', 'Sexual', 'Social' and 'Sacred' Beings. One need to grow in all these four dimensions in order to live life more fully. Failure to focus on any of these areas would lead to indifference, abuse, exploitation and loss of purpose in life. Through a lot of examples and daily life choices, he challenged the students to make responsible choices especially in their relationships.

All through the sessions, the students were highly attentive and participated actively in all the exercises. After the session, a number of students took time to write their views in the AVEC logbook of appreciation. Some of the comments are written below:

ST. ANNE'S FORT - VIII - IX Students' Orientation

February 14, 2011: ST. ANNE'S GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL - FORT

The AVEC team today visited the St. Anne's High School, Fort and animated over 160 students from standard eight and nine on the importance of living a meaningful and valued life. The session began with a prayer song and a prayer invoking the blessing of God. Fr. Glenford then challenged the students through a number of interactive moments on the importance of moving from living a 'quantitative life' to a 'qualitative way of life'. "It is not how long you live but how one lives that matters", he stressed.

During the session the students had to face the reality of their life and the time spent daily. In a simple, yet powerful way, they were challenged to re-set the clock of their lives on to what is more important in their lives. This session was an eye-opener to many... the purpose of life is to live a life of purpose. Fr. Glenford took up the 12 point Value based skill for leading one's life more purposefully and meaningfully. With the use of motivating video clips, interactive sessions and time for sharing and reflection, the students discovered a new way of appreciating themselves as 'loved and valued'.

At the end of the two session. Nikita D'Silva proposed a vote of thanks. Later on, on behalf of the AVEC, Fr. Glenford Lowe presented a plaque as a sign of appreciation to Sr. Prudence, Principal of the school, for their active involvement in the promotion of AVEC activities. 24 schools affiliated to the ABE will be presented with these token of appreciation awards.

CONVENT OF JESUS AND MARY - KHARGAR

February 12, 2011: The AVEC team today spent time at Convent of Jesus and Mary, Khargar to animate a students Value Orientation program for a hundred and ninety students from VIII -IX. Though being a school holiday, the students took time to participate in the program whole heartedly. There was never a dull moment at any time. After a brief introduction by one of the teachers, Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes than took over the animation program with a hymn on creation followed by a fantasy meditation.

The students then took time to look at the lives in a more meaningful way. Through various interactive sessions, moments of personal reflection and adding humor to deep insights, Fr. Glenford Lowe was able to guide the students to live lives more meaningfully. "You need to spend your time focusing on what is important in your lives", he emphasized.

After a short break, Fr. Glenford presented the Twelve Values that needed to be cultivated in one's life. Using a PowerPoint presentation, coupled with powerful motivating video clips and songs, the message was loud and clear. The students took time to look at their lives through a new lens. They began to believe in themselves and realized the importance of being loved and valued. At the end of the session, Head girl Laura Miranda proposed the vote of thanks.

February 5, 2011:LEADERSHIP PROGRAM FOR ROSARY SCHOOL

Thanks to the foresight of Sr. Priya, Principal of Rosary High School, Dockyard that thirty two potential leaders of the school were able to participate in a training program for Leaders. The AVEC team took full advantage of this invitation and enabled to students to understand better the role of leaders and to make responsible shifts in their leadership styles.

Fr. Glenford Lowe and Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes conducted a packed program that included a lot of inspiring activity based sessions, lively interactive moments and interspersed with fun and active participation. The new school student leaders were enlightened on the importance of Self Awareness, Vision, Smart Planning, Team Work, Creativity, Responsible Delegation and Accountability, Communication, Time Management, the value of Self-renewal and the power of leaving a legacy.

In spite of being a holiday, the students never found it a waste of time or ever complained. "In fact, it is good for us to be here today, we learnt so much", said a potential leader. Mr. Peter, a teacher was also present for the entire session. There was never a moment when the students showed any signs of fatigue or disinterest.

January 24, 2011: St. Anne's Convent - Fort: Std X Animation

The standard Ten students of St. Anne's Convent, Fort were given an opportunity by their school management to have a few hours of 'prime time' to be challenged and motivated once again by the AVEC Team. Fr. Glenford Lowe and Mr. Rochwyn animated the seventy students as they prepared them selves to face their future with hope and optimism. Sr. Prudence, the Principal, together with Sr. Simplifer organized the event for the students.

Mr. Rochwyn began by animating the students to calm down through a moment of personal relaxation and a fantasy meditation. It was really edifying to see all the students participate in the entire event with a lot of attention and serenity. He then introduced Fr. Glenford and spoke about the AVEC responsibilities in promoting Values among the schools affiliated to the ABE.

Fr. Glenford Lowe invited the students to take the destiny of their future and to make responsible choices especially in the 'care of self'. He inspired the students to value their lives and to understand themselves as 'Sensual, Sexual, Social and Sacred beings'. Once we love ourselves and care for the Value of self, only then, will we be able to love and value God and Others. Through various interactive exercises and powerful video clips, the students were drawn to commitment themselves to re-set the clock of their lives and to focus on 'Meaning Questions' in order to live life with greater meaning and purpose.

The entire session was a happy blend, filled with fun and deep reflection. "You will not remain a tenth standard student all your life. Start seeing the big picture and climb every mountain to make your dreams come true," said Fr. Glenn. Through a twelve point recipe, he urged to students to live lives of deeper value and meaning. Only then can one live life with no excuses attached!!!

At the end of the session, a vote of thanks was proposed by Neha. In the AVEC logbook of appreciation, she wrote these following comments:

"The session was very meaningful. It was wonderful to have you with us. Today, as I looked into myself, I realized that I had given no importance to 'Self'. I now promise that as I move ahead I will definitely prove out to be a winner. Thank you Father for bringing out such an AH-MAZIN change in me!!!. I will keep the twelve points and follow them up daily. Thank you again." Neha Std X

Mr. Rochwyn then took time to wish the students all the best in the National exams and assured them all of our prayers. We are grateful to Sr. Prudence for going out of her way to make this possible for the students. God bless her abundantly.

At the request of Sr. Sophia, the principal of St. Anthony Girls' High School, Chembur, the AVEC team organised a day's retreat for thirty catholic students of standard seven. The students were invited by the preacher, Fr. Glenn Lowe to view the retreat as a 'Vacation with God and Self'. He based his talks on the scriptural passage 1Tim 4:12

The retreat began with a screening of prayerful and meditative hymns that set a spiritual ambient. It was encouraging to see the catholic students participating with full attention and eager to grow in their love for Jesus and His Gospel message.

Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes too joined in for the first time in animating the retreat. He helped the student to make a journey into their past and dreams in to their future. Through a lot of creative and interactive moments the students were able to get the message loud and clear. Celebrate life with no regrets and have the courage with God's grace to live your future with greater purpose and meaning.

The students took time to evaluate their live and re-set the clock of their lives based on Gospel values. Being the feast of of young student saint, Laura Vicuna, Fr. Glenn took the opportunity during the Eucharistic Celebration to help the students look at the life of this young saint and model their lives too on the path of holiness. A few elements of the Salesian Youth Spirituality were proposed as a means to live holy lives.

After the Mass, the students expressed words of appreciation and a few of them wrote their comments in the AVEC log book of appreciation. Given below are some of their comments:

January 21, 2011: St. Anthony's Girls - Chembur : Std VIII Retreat

The AVEC activities began once again with the annual retreat for the Catholic students of std. VIII. Thirty eight students participated in the retreat that was preached by Fr. Glenford Lowe. The Theme chosen for the occasion was based on the scriptural quote 1Tim 4:12 "Do not let anyone despise you because of your youth. Be an example to all the believers in conduct, love, faith, spirit and purity."

The students had an opportunity to look into themselves and make decisions for Christ. Using a number of video clips and scriptural texts, every student had an opportunity to share their faith stories and their journey to God. Using the 'River Me' as a guide, the reflective process was deep and challenging. The students were given an opportunity to discover the Our Father in a practical way that would enable them to become more prayerful people.

The Retreat ended with a meaningful mass. The call of the disciples was a moment to reflect on their own response to God's call in their lives. Christ has to become a CONVICTION rather than an OPINION.... a message that challenged the youngsters to live their lives as Catholics.

The students were very attentive all through the sessions and one could sense a difference in their view of God, others and self. The Commandment of Love became more real and attractive to live. The students expressed their thanks and committed themselves to make a difference in their personal lives.

December 10, 2010: St. Jerome’s High School, Mira Road: Students’ Value Orientation

The AVEC team visited St. Jerome’s High School, Mira Road at the request of their principal Sr. Nisha. Over ninety students from standards nine and ten participated in a three hour Value Orientation session. Being a new school, the students were really excited for their first seminar. After an initial welcome by the Principal and the school Head boy and Girl, the session began with a prayer song.

Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes then engaged the students in a fantasy meditation by enabling them to focus on their breath. Mr. Rochwyn invited to students to focus on their past and present moments of their lives and to see into the future. “Never let you past continue to remain your future,” he said.

After a break, Fr. Glenford took the students through a twelve point Valued program. Through these twelve Value based principles he challenged the students to have the courage to reset their goals, create new visions and add greater meaning and quality to one’s way of living and doing.

November 30, 2010: STD IX - ORIENTATION PROGRAM

The AVEC team was welcomed again today at St. Francis D'Assisi High School, Borivali by Mrs. Leela Valley on behalf of the school management. Over three hundred and twenty students of standard nine participated in a Value based orientaion program. The students were divided into two batches. Overall, the students were very cooperative and participated in all the activities that were offered this morning.

Through a variety of activities the AVEC team was able to draw the attention of the young students to look at their lives and to spend quality time on themselves in order to live life more meaningfully and to take responsibility for the choices they make. The young minds were invited to stretch their imagination and to focus on self - "You are loved and valued," said Fr. Glenn Lowe. Using a lot of visual aids and small interactive moments the students were able to get a better picture of themselves and to recreate a life of meaning and purpose.

Through these reflective moments coupled with a lot of challenging insights, the students took upon themselves the task of becoming 'light-house' students. You don't need to live as 'wheel-barrow' students who are constantly being pushed around. 'Light -house' students are able to shine their light and make a difference in the lives of others by standing tall and firm as beacons of hope and inspiration.

Over the last two days, through four two-hour sessions, the AVEC team was able to reach the hearts and minds of six hundred and forty students of standard nine. It is our wish and prayer that the seeds of inspiration and values may grow and bear much fruit. Sr. Mary Dhabi proposed the vote of thanks on behalf of the school management and students. Thanks to the Value Education coordinators, Mrs. Jacinta Lobo and Mrs. Leela Valley for the initiative they took to invite the AVEC team to address their young students. Thanks to all the students too for their very active participation and eagerness to make of their lives more meaningful and value-based.

November 29, 2010: STANDARD IX ORIENTATION PROGRAM

After a lot of planning and correspondence, the AVEC team finally were able to address the students of St. Francis D'Assisi High School, Borivali. Three hundred and forty students belonging to four divisions of standard nine participated in two two-hour sessions. It was remarkable to see the good behavior of the students and the attentiveness with which they participated in the entire four hours. After an initial welcome and a floral tribute the students were invited to place themselves in God's presence and to listen to a prayer song.

Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes took the two groups through a meditative experience that involved fantasy and awareness of themselves. The seriousness with which most of the students took part was truly rewarding. Boys' schools are often labelled noisy and distracted. But today, the ninth standard students proved all these assumptions wrong. They took up the challenge to be 'light-house' students rather than 'wheel-barrow' students.

Fr. Glenford Lowe then took the two batches of students through an inspirational roller coaster...it was a fascinating ride to make a journey into one's life and to reset the clock. .."Invest your time on what is important in your life and make a difference in the world," Fr. Glenn kept reminding. Through a variety of small exercises and interactive moments and with the use of modern media techniques the students were kept spell bound all through.

Thanks to the two Value Education Coordinators, Mrs. Juliet Lobo and Mrs. Leena Valley for the preparation and creating a conducive atmosphere for the sessions. After the sessions, the students were invited to write their comments in the AVEC logbook. Find below a long list of comments:

November 27, 2010: Holy Cross High School - Lower Parel

Could we say that today was the best of all?...without doubt, the Students Orientation Program for the students of standard ten at Holy Cross, Lower Parel was outstanding. Right form the word go, the hundred and ninety student conducted themselves as no other school would do. The Principal, Sr. Laila really prepared the students well for this Value Education Orientation program. The students began the session with welcoming the AVEC team with a floral tribute followed by an opening prayer, a song and word of welcome. The Orientation program had to take place in the parish church since the school auditorium was still under renovation.

The Orientation program started with a prayer song that drew the attention of the students to the presence of the God in all of creation. Through a short story and a fantasy meditation, Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes guided the students to be more aware of themselves and to have a sacred space within themselves where they can often go in to commune with God and self. The students really took this entire session very seriously. To gift oneself with a sacred space and to spend some quiet time is an investment in living a peaceful life.

Fr. Glenford Lowe challenges the young students to have the courage to reset the clock of their lives and to focus a greater amount of time on things that are more important that that is more attractive. "Honor yourself because you are valuable and lovable," he reminded them. Through a lot of interactive sessions and the use of media, he was able to bring home the message of living life with greater meaning and purpose. It was heart warming to see the young students so very receptive and eager to nourish their lives with this value-based motivational teaching. The two hours just flew past...

ST. JUDE'S HIGH SCHOOL, JARIMARI

November 26, 2010: St. Jude's High School - STD X Orientation

The AVEC team found themselves in a difficult situation right from the start they entered the school. In spite of all the prior communications, little seems to have been prepared. Finally, we were given the students from Standard Ten at the last moment. 'Proper preparation prevents poor performance'... the session began on a very very noisy note.....couldn't blame them... they never even knew why they were there!!! Finally, some sort of silence was attained and the sessions could begin. With no one to officially introduce us to the students, we took the task upon ourselves.

The students were invited to listen to a prayer song and to reflect on the presence of God in creation. Mr. Rochwyn introduced the days program and took the students on a fantasy flight... making them aware of the Divine space within each one and the need to be connected with that space. The students took this part of the session very seriously. They now seemed ready for the remaining part of the program.

Fr. Glenford Lowe began his part of the session with a story that helped the young minds to focus on what is really important in life. "You cannot cheat all the people all the time, and you cannot cheat yourself anytime," he said. Working through a reflective session the students were able to look at their personal lives a lot more honestly and to see what is important to them and to reset the clock of their lives to spend more time on areas that are important to them. One ought to place greater importance on self and spend more time in caring for self...

Spending a brief period of time on each of the Twelve points that are essential to living a life with a purpose, Fr. Glenford was able to capture the hearts and minds of the young students to make something worthwhile of their lives and to be Value-based in all that they do and are. Using various means of animation through PowerPoint presentations, use of video clips and youthful songs and interactive moments, the young students challenged themselves to start living the Twelve point program in right earnest. The head girl, Nehal Dwivedi then proposed the vote of thanks at the end of the session.

Swathy, a student of Std X, expressed her appreciation in the AVEC logbook in these words: 'It was a very beautiful presentation. It enriched my mind and it gave me a new perspective on how to be more successful and to value our lives better. It challenged me to make a positive contribution in our world."

CONVENT OF JESUS AND MARY - FORT

NOVEMBER 24, 2010: STD VIII ORIENTATION PROGRAM

The AVEC team was today welcomed at Convent of Jesus and Mary, FORT to conduct a two hour Value Orientation Program for ninety seven students of Standard VIII. After a brief welcome by the Principal, Sr. Arian, the students had an experience that was different from all the other seminars that they had attended.

The Value Orientation Program began with a prayer song that guided the young students to experience God in the beauty of Creation. Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes, guided the students through a short meditation that helped them to relax and focus on themselves. The students immediately immersed themselves into the fantasy meditation with all seriousness.

Fr. Glenford Lowe began his session with a famous African proverb, "I pointed my finger to the stars, and all you saw was the tip of my finger," he said. He challenged the students to stretch their minds and look at life differently. Using a short story of a boy with a problem, the youngsters were invited to find a solution to his problem. The students were able to start off on the right note.. it is important to perceive correctly in order to achieve the right results.

Using a TWELVE POINT Value based insights, Fr. Glenford was able to draw the attention of the students to have a 'Winner Attitude', to be a TEAM player, to Communicate Effectively, to exude confidence, to hone creativity, to learn from criticism, to multi task and prioritize one's schedule, to see the 'Big Picture', to tell the truth about money, to live a balanced life and to Live a life of Abundance.

Time flew quickly. Through the various interactive sessions, discussions, the various insights and the Twelve point value based program the students felt that they were sufficiently nourished for a life time. Speaking of behalf of the students, Zaynah Siddique expressed her thanks and mention that they had attended a lot of programs in the past but this one really made an impact on them.

A group of students then expressed their sentiment in the book of appreciation. On record we read: The message conveyed by Father Glenn and Mr. Rochwyn made us think about the brighter side of life. It was very inspiring for all of us students of the Fort. We know and are sure that it will help us to be better and successful citizens of tomorrow. ROSARY SCHOOL TEACHERS' ORIENTATION PROGRAM

NOVEMBER 23, 2010: ROSARY SCHOOL - DOCKYARD, TEACHERS' ORIENTATION PROGRAM

With the schools re-opening after the long Divali vacation, the AVEC team once again found itself at the center of animation. Twenty Six teachers of Rosary School, Dockyard , including their Principal, Sr. Priya attended a five hour Teachers' Orientation Program at the Don Bosco Youth Services, Matunga on November 23, 2010. This was indeed an opportune time for the teachers of the secondary school to take time to rejuvenate and commitment themselves whole heartedly to their calling as educators of the young.

The three sessions that followed were animated by Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes and Fr. Glenford Lowe. Through a prayer song that provided an opportunity to attune with the wonders of creation, Mr. Rochwyn then guided the participants to a few moments of self awareness and calming down through a short fantasy meditation. He then briefed the participants about the responsibilities of the AVEC. The teachers were then taken through an exercise of deeper awareness of their past, present and their future. "let your past direct you, not disturb you," and "let your future invite you to make something meaningful and purposeful of your lives," he said.

Fr. Glenford Lowe invited the teachers to take a 'new perspective' starting with themselves. New Perspectives trigger new procedural changes. We can think differently only if we see things differently. Often our old attitudes and assumptions prevent us from living our lives with a deeper spirit. We become victims of routine and stagnate in our age old assumptions. Using a lot of practical and everyday experiences of the class room, he was able to clarify a lot of preconceived notions.

The next session on 'Commitment' crowned it all. Without a 'personal resource' in all that we undertake and without the necessary 'psychological environment' there is very little that one can do to be more passionate. The teachers showed a keen interest in the sessions and found it extremely useful at the start of this new semester.

Beena Wadhwa proposed the vote of thanks on behalf of the school management. In the book of appreciation, she writes, "Very enriching program that brought about a lot of self-realization and awareness. Rich learning experiences and included very many thought provoking activities".

Geraldine Rodrigo expressed her thanks by stating that it was extremely interesting and was an eye opener in relating better with the students in these changing times. At the end of the five hour session, the teachers felt refreshed and pledged themselves to be more passionate and committed in their role as educators in Value clarification. the goal of Value Education is BECOMING. We are all 'being in process' and creating value based environments nurture the young students to become all that they are always meant to be!!!

TEACHERS' ORIENTATION AT KHARGAR

October 25, 2010: CONVENT OF JESUS AND MARY

The AVEC team were invited by the Convent of Jesus and Mary High School, Khargar for a Teachers' Orientation Program. Thirty four teachers along with their school Manager Sr. Juanita and Sr. Antoinette the Principal attended the inspiring program. In-spite of their busy schedule and examinations, the teachers showed keen interest and participated attentively all through.

After a brief introduction by Mrs. Satelda D'Souza, the Value Education Coordinator, floral bouquets were presented to the guest speakers by Mrs. Yolanda D'Mello and Jyoti Asawale. A prayerful song then followed. The teachers were then invited to take a relaxing posture. Mr. Rochwyn helped the participants to become more aware of themselves through a meditative breathing exercise. The activities of the AVEC were very briefly presented to the teachers.

Through a number of small exercises and reflective moments, Fr. Glenford Lowe drew the attention of the teachers to first 'care for self'. The difference we are ready to make in our lives is essential to trigger the difference we make in others. He challenged the participants to reevaluate their style and attitudes towards their students and profession. Re-framing one's vision to the goals of the Institution is essential for deeper commitment.

Overall, the teachers felt refreshed and highly motivated to respond to their vocation as an educator. After the two-hour session, many of the participants expressed their gratitude. "This session has been meaningful to me as an individual. To bring change in others, I first need to change myself," said Mrs. Sagaya Rani. Mrs. Louisa Peters proposed the vote of thanks on behalf of the management and teaching fraternity.

Our Lady Of Fatima, Vidyavihar IX - X Students' Orientation

OCTOBER 9, 2010: OUR LADY OF FATIMA - VIDVAVIHAR, STUDENTS' ORIENTATION PROGRAM

The AVEC team today offered an Orientation Program for over six hundred students of Our Lady of Fatima, Vidvavihar. The students were divided into two batches according to their respective classes. The students of standard Ten were first taken through a session on Twelve important Values for the Journey. After an initial problem with the sound system, the students soon got into the session.

Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes began the session on a firm note. Quite a few students at first showed no signs of interest. The audio wasn't too good either and the projection screen too small. The students slowly got in to the session through an short meditative moment. Fr. Glenn Lowe then took the students through the Twelve Values for the Journey. "You cannot fool all the people all the time and neither can you fool yourself all the time," was a constant refrain that the students kept hearing. "Your life is beyond classroom and academic results, But what you sow today, you will reap for the journey tomorrow," he said.

After both sessions, a number of students took time to come over an seek personal advice on various issues on how to handle stress, refocus on their studies, prioritize their schedules and time and live holistic lives. This was very well appreciated and it reflects on the important questions that students need to clarify. After a four hour marathon session, many of the students came up to write their impressions in the AVEC log book. Given below are some of their impressions:

October 7, 2010: OUR LADY OF FATIMA - Teachers' Orientation Program

In spite of being a holiday, over a hundred teachers of Our Lady of Fatima, Vidyavihar took time out to look into their lives and profession from a new perspective. At the request of the Principal, Fr. Joseph D'Souza,the AVEC team took the opportunity to animate the Teachers on the importance of having a Value based environment to enhance greater learning.

Although quite some time was lost in starting the session, the teachers were engrossed fully into the program. Fr. Joseph D'Souza welcomed the guest speakers and assured them of their total support in the AVEC activities. Mr. Rochwyn began by inviting the teachers to calm down and focus on the present moment through a breathing exercise. Initially, a prayer song added to creating a peaceful environment.

Fr. Glenford Lowe invited the teachers to look at their vocation as Educators who nourish the students holistically. Education is a matter of the Body-Head-Heart- Soul and not just mere academic excellence. Through a lot of life experiences, Fr. Glenn was able to challenge the teachers to be 'mentors' in the lives of their young students. The young students of today need to be guided to make the right choices in life and to be responsible for the consequences of their choices.

Time ran out... leaving little time for discussion and clarification. However, the teachers felt that the session was inspirational enough to set a new passion and commitment to: the Goals and Vision of the school, the teaching profession, the students development and to team work and fruitfulness. many teachers took time to express their appreciation.

ST. ANTHONY'S - CHEMBUR: CATHOLIC STUDENTS' RETREAT

October 1, 2010: ST. ANTHONY'S GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL - CHEMBUR

CATHOLIC STUDENTS' RETREAT (STD IX - X)

For nearly sixty Catholic students of St. Anthony's - Chembur, the day was an opportunity to do a lot of soul-searching and spending 'quality time' with self. Thanks to Sr. Sophie, Principal of the school, for giving an opportunity to all the Catholic students of Std IX and X to have a day's retreat. Fr. Glenford Lowe, from the AVEC team led the students through the reflective process.

Through a lot of interactive moments and sharing on various Gospel Values, the students were able to focus on their lives - their past, present and future and to discover the rich treasures that lie within each one of them. There was never a dull moment. Spiced with a lot of inspirational videos, songs and activities the Catholic students were led to appreciate themselves first and them to make a difference in the landscape through which their lives flow.

The second half of the retreat was spent in the chapel. The students were able to connect with their lives through a lot of creative self-discovery exercises. The 'RIVER ME' handout was the most helpful of all. One could see the seriousness and the attentiveness through which the students went through this exercise. Given an opportunity to internalize it deeper, every student took time off to be with oneself. "This was the best part of today's retreat," said a thankful student.

The students were then given an opportunity to participate in the Holy Eucharist. Fr. Glenford Lowe took time to explain a few parts of the mass and the break the word of God to the students on this First Friday and the Solemnity of the Patroness of the Missions. He challenged every student to be Missionary and to bring the Gospel of Jesus to their fellow companions within their own class and school.

Sr. Olinda assisted the students all the sessions together with their Faith Formation Teacher. Every student took the opportunity to look at their lives a lot more honestly in the light of the gospel. Words of appreciation and a token of love was presented to Fr. Glenford Lowe. SACRED HEART - VASHI: TEACHERS' ORIENTATION

September 30, 2010: Sacred Heart - Vashi; TEACHERS' ORIENTATION PROGRAM

Nearly sixty Teachers of Sacred Heart's High School - Vashi participated in a Teachers' Orientation Program that was animated by the AVEC team in the school Audio Visual hall.

The students were given an opportunity to leave school early so that the teachers could devote an entire session to themselves. The AVEC team enlightened the group on its various activities throughout the year and invited the teachers to play their role in inculcating important Values to their students and to create a Holistic Educational environment.

Mr. Aldo welcomed all the participants and introduced the two guest speakers. Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes invited to participants to spend some quality time with themselves through an awareness session. A prayer song set the reflective mood instantly. He then spoke to the teachers on the need to live their present lives with a future-bound goal. Through a playful yet reflective session he challenged the teachers to a higher quality of living and serving.

Fr. Glenford Lowe took time to clarify a lot of assumptions and attitudes that would stifle a teacher-student relationship. Through a series of statements and short discussion, the teachers were able to appreciate their teaching profession. "Students don't care how much you know, they want to know how much you care," he kept reminding them. After a short break, the participants were taken through another session that enabled them to see the importance of placing the student at the 'center' of the Educative environment.

At the end of the session, the teachers felt refreshed, renewed and energized to live up to their vocation as a teacher. Thanks to all the teachers and in a special way to the Principal, Sr. Malar Joseph for taking the time to plan and arrange this orientation program. Given below are some of the teachers' comments:

HOLY CROSS, Lower Parel -Teachers' Orientation Program

September 25, 2010: HOLY CROSS - Lower Parel, TEACHERS' ORIENTATION PROGRAM

The AVEC Team organized a two hour Teachers Orientation Program for the Primary and Secondary Teachers of Holy Cross High School, Lower Parel. Over fifty-five teachers gathered together in the school library to participate in the program. On behalf of the teachers, Ms. Margaret, the Value Education Coordinator, welcomed the guest speakers and introduced the purpose of this Orientation Program.

The program began with one of the teachers imploring God's blessings on the program. An opening prayer song then set the mood for deeper reflection and meaning. Mr. Rochwyn Fernandes introduced the session through an awareness exercise by focusing on one's breath. He then took the participants through a very practical session of appreciating their past and focusing on their future.

Fr. Glenn Lowe then began to focus on the need to give value and 'importance' to self and to share this 'value and importance to everyone' around. Change must being with self before it begins with others. Going through a long of personal experiences and clarifying various assumptions along the way, the teachers were able to appreciate their vocation as educators and sought how best to put them into practice.

ORLEM, SEPTEMBER 21, 2010: CARMEL OF ST. JOSEPH - STD X ORIENTATION

The AVEC team organised a two hour orientation program for two hundred and twenty students of Standard Ten from Carmel of St. Joseph, Orlem. Thanks to Sr. Shalom principal of the school, who took the initiative to have this session in Value Education for the students. The students were also accompanied by a number of teachers. After an initial introduction by the principal, Mr. Rochwyn began the session with a prayer song followed by an awareness session through a short meditation. The students took part in this exercise whole heartedly.

Fr. Glenn Lowe then took the students through a 'Twelve point' program in order to motivate the students to begin living their lives more meaningfully; to make a difference in their own lives first and then to 'be' a difference in society too. Using everyday life experiences and short video clips, the students were able to align themselves to cherish and own the values that were being clarified.

The students were deeply moved from within - many committed themselves to make a new start and to live a life of purpose and meaning. Time was too short.... but the message was for a life time. Given below are some of the observations written by the students in the AVEC log book:
